About

It all started in May 2007 when Melodie told Dale about an article she read about the growing "backyard theater" movement, the idea to purchase a projector seemed like a passing fancy - until they found the perfect projector up for auction on Ebay. Five days later the auction was over and they were the proud owners of an excellent used projector. Reading up at BackyardTheater.com and watching a couple of movies indoors inspired the whole family to pitch in to create Movie Nights for our friends, family and neighbors.

The Projector
Optoma EP 716 (specs).

The Screen
Figuring out how to get the right size screen has been tricky. We started with a 12' x 9' painters drop cloth. It hung from a 12' foot board that is raised and lowered with rope.

Our current screen is made from three pieces of rubber coated drop cloth from Home Depot, stitched together to create one lovely 15'x11' screen. It's raised and lowered with the same setup, and a 16' board.

The Speakers
Finding speakers was actually the easiest part of the whole project! It's a Sony stereo system we picked up for outdoor use last summer.
